HUNSTANTON HISTORY

Hunstanton Golf Club was established in March1891. It is a championship links — with Seaton Carew, the only one on the East Coast between Sandwich and Muirfield. The Club has hosted 40 events of national standing, among them 6 British Ladies and 3 English Amateur Championships, the Brabazon trophy five times (1966, 1973, 1980, 1991 and 2003) and the Boys’ Amateur Championship twice (1990 and 2005). See Honours Board

The first two champions (Miss Cecil Leitch in 1914(British Open Ladies) and Miss Joyce Wethered in1922 (English Open Ladies) were, at the time of winning, acknowledged to be the best lady golfers of their era.

The Boys’ Amateur Championship, under the auspices of the R&A, took place at Hunstanton for the second time in August 2005. 256 competitors (under the age of 18), from 21 countries, took part; the winner was Bernard Neumann (Germany) who beat Jordan Findlay (the 2004 Champion) 3/2 in the 36 hole final.

The most notable feat, never to be repeated, occurred in the East Anglian Foursomes in 1974. Bob Taylor, a Northhamtonshire County player, holed in one on three successive days at the 16th (188 yards) with a 1 iron, 6 iron and 6 iron. 31 years later (2005) he played the hole again and put his tee shot 6 feet from the hole!
